The definition of 'Irony'

As some of you may be aware, the son of Muammar El-Qaddafi, Saif Al Qaddafi, recently completed a PhD here at the LSE in the Government department. Here is a link to the full text of his PhD dissertation

  1. In one sense it is not that ironic as the view he (or someone else in his behalf..) expressed is that the global governance structure is highly undemocratic and dominated by the big powers:

"In this thesis I shall be primarily concerned with what I argue is the central failing of the current system of global governance in the new global environment: that it is highly undemocratic (...) As they were founded and dominated by the Great Powers, there was an imbalance of power within these institutions at the time of their inception and, as membership of these IGOs has grown, this imbalance has remained, if not increased " (p. 12).

He seems not to have made any claim about the governance structure of specific countries, like his own. Given the way that the last UN decision on Lybia was taken, right after the US and UK made up their minds, it's hard not to agree with the main point of his thesis. And even though he clearly doesn't see the need for democracy within his country (which is indeed ironic), his thesis probably makes more sense to him now than it ever did.
